“The Cost of a Scandal” Layout and Photos
“The Cost of a Scandal” was a longform feature story for the first issue of Synapse, a UNC student-run tablet magazine. Throughout the story, reporter Caitlin McCabe analyzed multiple costs that resulted because of UNC’s athletic, academic, and sexual assault scandals. Because there were so many numbers, I decided to break down the costs on the sides of the story to make the information easier for readers to understand. This story was all scrolling, meaning that as users scroll down the tablet, the text and background changes together (similar to scrolling down a webpage). Toward the end of the story, I made a large bar graph showing where the money to pay for the scandals originated. The graph intersected with the text to illustrate the vast amount of money the UNC-CH Foundation paid.
